New UK waste and water sites: September 2026

A recycler cannot take a new material, and a treatment works cannot discharge more, until its permit says so. Each new permit or variation names the tonnage, the materials and the date, which makes them the most precise public record of where waste and water capacity is growing.

How this page counts

What is counted
A new environmental permit, or a variation that raises capacity or adds materials or operations, at a waste, recycling, anaerobic digestion or water treatment site.
What is left out
Surrenders, transfers, administrative variations and consultations that change nothing on site.

Why it matters to a supplier

  • A permit that adds a material or a process is close to a specification for the plant that has to be bought: shredders, balers, treatment stages, monitoring.
  • Most of these changes need no building work, so they never show up in construction statistics.
  • New permits come with duties to monitor, report and protect against fire, each of which is bought from someone.

Questions

Why is tonnage missing on some sites?
Because the record does not always state it, and the engine never guesses. Where a change in capacity is stated, it is counted; where it is not, the site is still listed.
Does this include water company programmes?
Only where a specific site's permit changes. Framework programmes let to a handful of contractors are not what this page is for.
